Roblox Testing Generative AI Tools On Its Platform

The gradual march of AI in game development continues. This time it's Roblox.

Roblox recently announced it is testing generative AI tools in its platform. The tools allow a user or developer to build or modify in-game content with AI writing the code.

Here’s what we know so far

  • Roblox's new tool will let you create, modify, and add interactive properties to in-game items using natural language commands. For example, you could type "red paint, reflective metal finish" to change the appearance of a car in the game.

  • Although developers already use AI tools to do the same thing, these tools are integrated into Roblox.

  • The code-making AI that Roblox is using relies on a combination of in-house technology and capabilities from outside.

  • And they are taking a cautious approach to ensure that its AI tool only uses game content in the public domain and won't infringe on users' intellectual property.

  • The first two tests of the tools are expected to roll out in the coming weeks: one to make “generative AI materials from a text prompt” and the other for generative AI to complete code.

What it looks like

Did Yuga Labs Steal IP For Logo

A bombshell just dropped about NFT hitmaker Yuga Labs.

The accusation? Stolen IP for their BAKC (Bored Ape Kernel Club) logo. Not a good look since they are currently pursuing trademark lawsuits against other projects.

Here's the backstory

Yuga Labs released the BAKC collection last June and then applied to trademark the logo in November. However, someone on Twitter spotted that Easy Drawing Tutorial had already posted an image of a similar wolf skull three months earlier, in April 2021.

Looking at both images, it's hard to find a distinguishable difference. Here's @CoffeeSnob_ layering both images on each other to show this very point.

The latest

Yuga Labs have stated that they hired a freelancer to create the logo and have reached out to both the freelancer and Easy Drawing Guides to investigate. But Easy Drawing Guides has made very little comment on the matter aside from acknowledging that the logo is very similar to theirs.

There seems to be no legal action at this time but time would tell. In the meantime, Yuga Labs have updated the BAKC logo on popular NFT marketplace, OpenSea.

Our take

This is something that happens a lot when using freelancers for logo design. It is best to do an image search when you receive work from a freelancer to avoid this mess.
