Neal Stephenson Talks Metaverse On a16z Podcast

Neal Stephenson, author of Snow Crash and father of the word “Metaverse”, went on the a16z podcast to talk about the future of the metaverse. We watched the hour-and-a-half podcast to get you the hot takes.

  • The metaverse is one world with different experiences that several people put together on an ad hoc basis. No surprise here, the definition is pretty much what he envisioned in Snow Crash. So what does this mean? Meta’s metaverse is not a metaverse neither are all the projects claiming to be metaverse.

  • Fortnite and Minecraft are the closest to what a metaverse experience should be. Why? They allow users to create worlds within their ecosystem that others can experience.

  • AR/VR is not needed to build the metaverse. The human brain is adaptable and can use primitive controls to navigate 3D worlds like we already do.

  • A project interestingly using blockchain tech is Shrapnel by Neon. They are using smart contracts to distribute revenue streams to people who contribute to the project, including players. Players are given tools to create maps, tournaments and vanity gear, then earn rewards depending on the usage.

  • Neal is working on a Layer 1 called Laminar 1. This new L1 blockchain claims it is optimized for the Open Metaverse, providing communities with infrastructure to build a more immersive internet without pesky gatekeepers. They are doing these by fixing how payment for hire works (especially international talent and the Hollywood waterfall payment structure) and how asset use are tracked across projects.
