Ava Labs and AWS Partnership

In a Twitter announcement on Wednesday, Avalanche developer Ava Labs stated it had entered into a partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to offer crypto infrastructure and enable enterprise, institutional, and government adoption of blockchain technology. This move is an essential step toward the mainstream adoption of blockchain technology in the traditional Web2 space. Let's dive in and see what this partnership brings to the table.

Everything we know about the partnership

  • This partnership will allow for the deployment of Avalanche's unique technology, Subnets, as a service on the AWS Marketplace.

  • Companies and organizations can enlist Ava Labs to launch a custom Subnet for them on the AWS platform.

  • Avalanche nodes will also be able to run in the AWS GovCloud for government-related data storage, allowing government organizations to adopt Avalanche technology for public sector projects.

  • Ava Labs is also joining AWS Activate and the AWS Partner Network (APN) to solidify the ties between Avalanche and AWS and provide members with growth tools and funding resources.

  • AWS will also participate in future Avalanche-related events, further positioning Avalanche as a strong player in the enterprise and government blockchain space.

Our take

This partnership between Ava Labs and AWS adds to the list of cloud services Avalanche is partnered with including Google Cloud, Alibaba Cloud and Microsft Azure. Avalanche is surely being positioned as a strong player in the enterprise and government blockchain space, an increasingly important area for blockchain adoption.

Although the technology is focused on high compliance use cases, we could see other use cases such as gaming leverage this.

Can Human Psychology Help Make Better Game NFTs

NFTs in gaming have drawn mixed reactions as it turns out it's harder to ship a FUN Web3 game than you think. When we look across the road at startup land, they go in with the mindset of what problem they are solving and for whom. In gaming, we should take the approach of who we are entertaining. At least that's what Adrian Krion, Founder of Wombat (Web3 wallet) and Spierlan (blockchain-based gaming company), believes.

To understand how we can use NFTs to benefit gamers, Adrian applied an old theory called "Bartle's Player Taxonomy" to sort different use cases for NFTs.

What is Bartle's Player Taxonomy?

Bartle's Player Taxonomy is based on Dr. Richard Bartle's work analyzing the archetypes of players in MUDs (multi-user dungeons). It categorizes players into four groups socializers, killers, explorers and achievers, based on their motivations and preferences.

Now you have the gist of this taxonomy, let's break down what the groups are and how Adrian applies them to NFT use cases in gaming.

1/ Socializers

They thrive on the social aspect of multiplayer games and the connections they can make with other players. Features from basic chat to co-op missions motivate these players in the game.

  • You can create NFTs that allow players to showcase their membership in a particular clan or community in the game.

  • Another worth considering is rewarding players with NFTs for working together to complete specific in-game tasks like loot for completing a dungeon that is either split across the group or owned by the group.

2/ Explorers

Players in this archetype are driven by the thrill of discovery and adventure in games and the satisfaction of uncovering hidden secrets and easter eggs.

  • These players may appreciate NFTs that serve as rewards for uncovering hidden areas.

  • You could also give NFTs for completing unique challenges within the game.

3/ Achievers

The achievers are motivated by the challenge of beating the game and competing with others. Flexing because you can. They want to be able to show badges of their achievements.

  • Use NFTs to reward them for their achievements and progress in the game that can be signalled on social platforms. Looking at you, EA 👀 for giving me nothing for my 74-game win streak in online mode.

  • You can also reward them with unique NFTs displayed in the game. Think of a non-tradable limited ball skin for scoring 5,000,000 goals in a soccer game.

4/ Killers

Killers are all about PvP experiences. These players are motivated by competition and enjoy dominating or defeating other players.

  • Rather than the open market to distribute territorial-based NFTs (land), you could limit it to clan battles as a means of acquiring them.

  • This group could potentially be engaged by incorporating NFTs as rewards for winning or achieving high scores in competitive games or tournaments.

  • You could also allow them to quickly convert memorable kill-cams and play-of-game moments as NFTs to flaunt their glory.

Our take

Going back to first principles to understand the player motivation for your game would always help produce a better experience for them.
